This lovely time of year is seeing us busy putting lots of great things together for our customers.

Because, well… you’re the best!

One of the most common questions we receive involves being able to reuse or at least make move-able, our vinyl decals.  There are many surfaces you can apply a vinyl decal to.  Glass, mirrors, tiles, painted/ treated canvas or wood, charger plates and more!   We are particularly enamored with the use of stretched canvas.   Create the look you want that has the added bonus of portability!  Move and display again in a new location or at a later time. (Perfect for decorating for each season or holiday!)  Detailed instructions as well as a step by step video will be included in our next post. Check back!

Holiday Guests

The Holiday Hostess: My journey in how to get ready for planned and unplanned Holiday guests

Take a minute and just consider the best memories you have of visiting friends and family members in their home. I’ve been the recipient of many gracious hosts and hostesses. While scrolling through my mental memory book, several ideas came to mind of fun ideas that I can easily implement to make my guests feel the same welcoming warmth that I have received. While dwelling on the memories of Holidays spent with family and friends was pleasant, I soon realized I had work to do! Of course everything seems well put together when you’re the one visiting, but sometimes when you’re the hostess (or host), things can seem hectic and often not quite the way you planned.

So I began by making a basic lists of elements that should be addressed when preparing for guests in my home.  (I’m a list person)

List One: Basic Needs

In this list are sleeping arrangements (Is there a spare bedroom or an area?)

Do I need to purchase or borrow air mattresses, sleeping bags or cots?

Gather sheets, blankets and pillows (2 per person per bed) as needed.

Divide the space into a sleeping area as much as possible.  You can use furniture, plants, or a screen, just get creative. Always start in the corners and near walls as to utilize as much space as possible and try to keep the middle section area of the space open and clutter free for walking space and socializing.

So, which bathroom will they use, and is it stocked with extra towels, toilet tissue, new toothbrushes and paste, hand and body soap, a razor, neutrally scented shampoos and lotions? (Most of us forget one or two small necessities when traveling, and nobody wants uncle Bob to be stuck without a toothbrush for a week! So it’s best to have some spares on hand.)

List Two:  Thoughtful Touches

These are the extras that say “You’re Our Guest, Make Yourself At Home”!  In fact, we have a beautiful wall quote that says just that.

In this list you’ll also want to add: A decorative yet comfy blanket for the bed, books and magazines, a clock, a box of tissues, fresh flowers, lamp or perhaps some holiday decor.  A pad of paper and a pen can also be a nice touch.

Don’t forget to leave space in a dresser or closet for their belongings. I don’t particularly like living out of a suit case, so if I have somewhere to hang, or fold my clothes it helps me feel more organized and at home, even if I’m not at home.

Keep in mind:  the kitchen will be affected, so I add the guests favorite snacks and drinks. Consider food allergies or preferences (like vegetarian, gluten free or vegan). Although, I must note here that if a guests’ eating habits are drastically different from yours, ask for their help in preparing their meals.  I’m sure the request would be welcome and appreciated.

List Three: Have, Borrow, Buy

As I took inventory of what I had on hand, what I could borrow and what may be purchased, I realized this could get out of control if I allowed it to.  Not everything on my lists were “essentials”.  I didn’t want to overspend time and money on things that wouldn’t be used.  With a high demand on both resources this time of year. Focusing on the reasons my family is celebrating put me in the right frame of mind to get to work.

So with that focus in mind, I narrowed the lists down to what was time and cost effective and now I know it will turn out beautifully. Without the stress of large, unplanned expenses.

To sum up, here are some tips:

-Do something everyday to get ready even if it’s small, it will be one less thing you have to do when your guests arrive.

-Use what I already have, or borrow it from neighbors and friends that are close by.

-Don’t be stressed out. As the host or hostess, if you are calm and easy going, everybody will be much more comfortable in your home.

– Perhaps, most importantly, keep it simple. This will help alleviate your stress. Remember to enjoy your guests!

There you have it. As I was writing this, the excitement of having guests has been growing. Knowing they will be comfortable is a a pleasant and rewarding addition to my holiday joy!

June – Fathers Day, What To Do

Father’s Day  –  June 15th, 2014

As a young man he had the whole world before him, endless possibilities and dreams. He meets a young woman that shares those same ideals and dreams. They fall hopelessly in love and become one unit, embarking on a life long journey. A journey of challenging times that were counterbalanced by remarkable ones, like the birth of his children.  He approached fatherhood with strength, steadfastness, understanding, humor and selflessness like only a father can do. His hands were steady and strong to guide his children from the cradle, through adolescence, to adulthood. Now as a grandfather he has yet another opportunity to provide guidance and understanding to his grandchildren. This is a man to be admired and respected for his depth of character, for this man that has given so much of himself for the family he loves. As  his day approaches, how and what is sufficient enough to let him know how much gratitude and love you have for him? Being the man he is, a simple “I Love You” or “Thanks” might be adequate however how about something he wouldn’t expect.  Show him just how much he means with a heart warming quote, from Wall Written.

Or what are his interests? Is the garage his domain? Is he the Barbecue King? The Pancake Master? Or is he hooked on fishing? Make a space uniquely for him, put up some wall art that shows it.

April Showers bring May Flowers and more…

Oh.. so much more….framed-monogram-for-web

After all of the wedding showers, and baby showers I went to, I find myself amazed that yet another wedding has crept up on me. So now to conjure up a truly unique gift. I prefer to give meaningful gifts based on things I know about the couple. Gift registries are only in an absolute emergency. Thank goodness I’m not there yet. I visited the Wall Written website and utilizing the custom design tool I came up with a perfect gift. Which I call “Framed Glass Monograms”. This project is a wonderful keepsake with their surname in larger letters with the word “Established” and the year married.

When huge sales come along at local craft stores I buy a variety of picture frames. The size isn’t hugely important. Nothing really big, anything within a 9″ to 24″ size.  Shape doesn’t matter much either. With this project you just go with the flow. I like that. Used frames work as well. Thrift stores are a great place to look.

Once I have the frame(s), I grab the invite and check out the soon-to-be-married couple’s last name. Let’s say for example the last name is Robertson. Then I go to  Wall Written’s website to the create your own tab. You can set the background to the same measurements as the glass in the frame you are going to use. From there, choose a font. I usually go with a simple, easy to read script font for the surname and classic print lettering for “Established 2014”.

Something like this:

Framed-Monograms

There are some really nice embellishments that can be added as well, such as ornamental lines to go between the first and second lines, imparting a certain je na sias quoi to your creation.  As for colors, I think black, slate or chocolate are wonderful, additionally, etched glass looks simply elegant. If you know their décor use these suggestions as a guide. You can choose one or two colors. The design tool will let you decide the look you want, and is super easy.

For assembly see the instructions on Wall Written’s Channel on YouTube or visit their web site.  Basically, you just remove the backing from the frame, take out the glass, clean it, apply the vinyl, and then put the glass back in the frame. Use hot glue to hold the glass securely to the frame, add some coordinating ribbon for hanging and Violà! You’re done! A thoughtful, memorable gift.

This is a great decorating idea for the Do-It-Yourself  Bride-To-Be, except use a table top picture frame or place the frame on an ornamental easel. For the back of the frame, hot glue ribbon, or braided cord in the same or complimentary color as the frame, being sure to cover the backside of the frame as well as the glass edges. Place on the tables at the rehearsal dinner and use them again at the reception. After the big day the bride and groom have their own keepsake and the remaining frames can be given as Thank You Gifts.

This design could be used for an anniversary present, as well as a baby shower gift –  recording the new bundle of joy’s birth, list the baby’s’ name and statistics creating a unique and indelible keepsake.

Nice, easy and very thoughtful, sure to be a hit no matter what the occasion!
