Decorating with Embellishments

When decorating your home, sometimes less is more! Try starting with smaller items or ideas that you can build on, rather than working with too many ideas.  Not knowing how to scale it back when things get too overwhelming can be frustrating to the point of not doing anything at all!   Our Unwritten Decal selection is the perfect solution for this–by finding something simple and unique first, you’ll be able to gain inspiration and not get your ideas scrambled.

Adding tasteful and easy-to-install embellishments to your home can update an old display or a neglected area and give your space the “facelift” it’s been needing!

You can browse our “Shapes and Symbols” embellishments here.

Finding Your Design Style

Over the next few weeks, we will be doing a series on decorating (or re-decorating!) your home on a budget, and we thought there was no better way to kick off this series than by helping you decide what your design style is.

Knowing what designs, color palettes, and accessories inspire you can help you decorate your home–and help keep things from looking jumbled and unfinished! There are an indefinite amount of design styles out there, so we are going to discuss just a few:

Country, Eclectic, Shabby-Chic, and Traditional.

These of course can be tweaked to  convey your personality and the mood you hope to set in your home, but here are a few of the thoughts and ideas we have come up with in each category.

This design style is all about feeling cozy and at home. If you feel drawn to painting your walls with soft colors and filling the room with knick-knacks and antiques, this is the perfect design style for your home.

Think: Antiques, small prints and uses of plaid, white furniture, distressed wood.

Country Style

Eclectic is a little more open-ended and leaves room for your imagination to really shine through. This style is for lovers of bright colors and mixing and matching prints and accessories.
Think: Vintage pieces of furniture mixed with modern accessories (and lots of them!), off-beat items, colorful walls.

Ecclectic Style

Shabby-Chic has really grown in popularity, as it is a great fit for the DIY-er in you and gives your home a comfortable, yet elegant feel.

This style mixes the colorful and polished with the rustic and austere.
Think: Vintage pieces of furniture, distressed wood, DIY painted furniture, white walls.

Shabby Chic style

Lastly is Traditional, which is exactly as it sounds! This is the refined and gorgeous home that I think everyone dreams of having at some point in their lives.
Think: Rich colors, plush furniture, dark stained wood, decorative trims.

Traditional Style

We hope this has been helpful in finding a style that  appeals to your tastes or at least jump starts your creativity!  Finding your design style can be a journey in self-discovery.  Jump in and get started, and if we can help you with quotes or embellishments we’ve already designed, great!  If not, we can get something customized for your unique style. We want you to be happy and excited about the new environment you created.

The Intellectual Office

White Space

The atmosphere in your office should reflect what you want to accomplish in this room.  Most home offices are intended to be a special place to accomplish specific tasks, but still inspire and motivate you to be productive. Here are a few suggestions for creating such a setting.

Ponder color schemes.  Using rustic tones is a wonderful choice when you’re striving to encourage intellectual thinking. These are deep, earthy colors that aren’t distracting or too eye catching. They help you absorb your surroundings without diverting attention away from your work. Also, think about using lighting that emulates natural light if your office does not have a window.

Accessorize with items that are intellectually grounded. Consider globes, maps, hour glasses, books, favorite paintings or personal photos — whatever inspires you. Be aware of items that distract and draw your attention away and avoid using them.  Below are a few of the new office decals we recently added to our site.  They embody old world charm and are so versatile!  Just remember: The more pleasant and inviting your space, the more you will want to be there.OfficeWhite Space
3. Optimize your productivity.   Organization will go a long way to help keep your study space clutter free. Having a space that is functional and organized is an important part of having an organized mind. It allows you to keep your thoughts collected and clear as well as helping you find materials as you need them.
